Since the whole world except the family of Noah was destroyed during the Flood, and Noah was the most righteous of his generation, it is simply common sense that there were teachings he passed down to his three sons.  These are the seven categories of laws referred to as the Noahide Code.  It constitutes the oldest religion in the world (six of the rules being initially given to Adam).  And it is intended to be universal. To a large extent these categories define the practices of a monotheistic religion. Furthermore, studying and observing this code is intimately intertwined with advancing the coming of the Messiah.

I think this is an important book for helping to give detailed form and substance to this most important (but little talked about) code.  In fact, this may be the "only" book of its kind.

I will just list the categories, and then highlight a few passages from this book.
The six negative rules are:  idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft, forbidden physical relations, and eating a limb taken from a living animal.  The positive rule is establishing courts of law.

On Idolatry (p. 57):  All false prophets, their disciples, and other idolatrous practitioners instill fear in the hearts of their victims, usually by threats of eternal and horrific damnation or other similar terrors. One can strengthen his heart against these threats by remembering that G-d is All-merciful and rewards and punishes according to a person's deeds, and that even His punishments come as correction and purification of the soul.  As King David wrote, "Do not place your trust in benefactors, nor in the son of man in whom there is no salvation.  Fortunate is he whose helper is the G-d of Jacob, whose hope rests upon the L-rd his G-d." (Psalms 146:3,5)

(p. 58):  A pillar structure that serves as a central point of worship for gatherings of people is called a "matzeva" (a forbidden pillar) in Hebrew.  It is forbidden even if the people come in order to worship G-d, for this was a way of the ancient idolaters.  (The Kaaba stone in Mecca is just such a forbidden pillar; ref: Miamonedes, Mishna Torah.)  And the concept of the forbidden pillar is still with us today in full fashion.

(p. 55):  The three chief idolatrous images in the world are: (a) the dragon, which is a derivation of the primordial serpent (see Babylonian Talmud, Avodah Zarah 42b); (b) a full figure of a man offering the beholder something from the palm of his hand (ibid 41a - this image is commonly found today in front of certain churches); and (c) a woman nursing an infant.  This last image is the idolatrous perversion of Eve, the mother of all mankind.  It became the symbol of the "queen of heaven," and it is an image that still pervades numerous cultures and religions.

Well, these are just a few explosive highlights from the first category, so I hope everyone will read the rest of the book for more amazing insights.

Judaism and Homosexuality: An Authentic Orthodox View, Rabbi Chaim Rapoport

pub. Vallentine Mitchell ('04, 231 pgs.)

To purchase this book online: CLICK HERE

Reviewed for Amazon.com by Dr. Michael Schulman,
Director of Ask Noah International, United Noahide Academies and AskNoah.org

This book has been acknowledged by leading Orthodox Rabbis as a groundbreaking effort to take into account the influences and impact of modern Western society. The author searches out all opportunities to apply sensitivity and caring while faithfully adhering to Torah Law ("halacha"). It is extensively researched and presents a most appropriate Orthodox response to this issue as it applies to Jews, but in doing so it probes the philosphical, moral, emotional, physiological and psychological dimensions of homosexuality which apply across the board.

The book is valuable for arriving at the Torah Law perspective for today's Gentiles as well. The Noahide Commandments are brought into the discussion, and in numerous places the Torah Laws for both Jews and Gentiles are outlined and compared. The author is careful to delineate how the halacha applies for men and how it applies for women. He also includes relevant Chassidic teachings which are essential for full understanding and proper perspective.

Some Orthodox critics have rushed to unwarrented criticisms of this book because they did not read it carefully and intelligently enough to understand the author's intricate analysis of homosexuality in the comparison with other Jewish prohibitions of the Torah, and that he does not, in the final analysis, suggest any deviation from established halacha. In particular the author underscores the fact that sensitivity on a personal level does not carry over into the grave phenomenon of factional and organizational attempts to legitimize a gay or lesbian lifestyle to society. The real-life "Questions and Responses" and voluminous footnotes add richness and depth for all readers.

From the book jacket: "[This book] discusses scores of actual questions on ethical dilemas in business as well as everyday life. The author ... not only gives answers but also provides a lucid and inspiring presentation of underlying ethical concepts, with special emphasis on the insights of Jewish tradition. The discussions sensitize the reader to ethical concerns in all areas of life, and build a comprehensive foundation of concepts to help resolve these concerns. Honor Due to Parents, by Rabbi J. Immanuel Schochet, pub. Kehot (paperback, 28 pgs)

As a positive Torah Commandment, "Honor your father and mother" is not included in the Seven Noahide Laws beyond a baseline prohibition of ridiculing or disgracing ones parents. However, the positive aspect of honoring parents was also universally recognized by Gentiles as a sound ethical principle which should be observed within the Torah's guidelines. Looking deeply into the implications and details of this Mitzvah, we find a profound religious significance that reaches beyond the literal context. This brief, provocative booklet explains the practical as well as the philosophical aspects of its fulfillment.

From the Overview section, p. xxxv:

The Rebbe possesses an unprecedented combination of abilities enabling him to resolve Torah-science issues. Indeed, since Maimonides there probably has not been another Torah scholar with an encyclopedic knowledge of the sciences and the philosophy of science comparable to the Rebbe. This only partially related to the fact that in the 1930's he studied science, philosophy, and engineering at some of the best universities in Europe - the Sorbonne, the Polytechnic Institute of Paris, and the University of Berlin. The academic background, combined with mastery of the nigle (the "open," talmudic meaning of the Torah) and the nistar (the secret meanings of the Torah) and the special vision of a tzaddik (righteous person) enables the Rebbe to resolve the Torah versus science "argument" and put it into the proper perspective.

Truly there is nothing besides G-d, and it is everyone's sacred duty to study about G-d's essential unity. Now you can do this in a clear, understandable way.

Restore My Soul ("Meshivat Nefesh"), by Rabbi Nachman, trans. Avraham Greenbaum,
pub. Breslov Research Institute ('80, 128 pages)

Reviewed by Ellen (Bas Noah):

This is a wonderful little book of teachings by Rebbe Nachman. It's about despair and hope, loss and fullfillment, descents and ascents. It helped me through a major low, though it may not be the thing for students who are just beginning to learn about the Torah way. Here are some of my favorite passages:

1) In the introduction by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, it is written "even in the darkest hours of his life - with his body torn by tuberculosis, Rebbe Nachman gave one of his most important messages: "Gevalt!! Never give up hope!"

22) When a man has to rise from one level to the next, prior to his ascent he must first undergo a descent. The paradox is that the very purpose of the descent is the ascent. From this you can see how much strength is required in the service of G-d. Even when you fall or descend in any way, you must never allow yourself to be thrown off balance.. Regardless of what happens to you, in the end you will find that all your descents will be turned into great ascents and achievements, because the purpose of the descent is for the ascent.

Depression is a terrible scourge.. You should always take care to work on yourself to bring joy into your soul. There are many good ways of doing this, as will be explained later. Joy is the foundation of spiritual strength. As we find written "for delight in G-d, that is your strength." (Neh 8:10)

49) In the end a way will be found to turn everything to good.

78) Despair must be totally ruled out. When a person begins to realize how far he is from G-d, even if he feels he is at the farthest extreme from G-d, this should not be a reason for despair. On the contrary, it should be his consolation: through this he can revive himself. For now he is conscious of his distance. He might have been so far away that he would not even have been aware of the fact, but now he acknowledges it. Far he may be, but his very awareness of this is dear in the eyes of G-d. This in itself should give him strength and life.

7) No one should ever give up hope for himself, however far he has fallen. Even there he can draw close to the Al-mighty. For the whole earth is filled with His glory. The true tzaddik is only worthy of the name in virtue of his power to restore to life even those who are fallen farthest and to raise them up. He can given them new strength and courage. He can rouse them and stir them up. He can reveal to them that regardless of what may have happened G-d is still with them, near them, close at hand, and concerned in every way. For the whole earth is filled with His glory.

Everyone in the world derives his life from the Torah. The simple and the sinners of the Gentile nations of the world - for everyone the source of life lies in the Torah.

Reviewed by Josep (Ben Noah):

Lacking a sense of self-worth can make you sometimes feel despondent. What really worked for me is the book "Ten Steps to Being Your Best“ by Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski. Rabbi Twerski's work is not only a book; it's a PRACTICAL HANDBOOK to enhance your life in every way. It directs you to keep at hand a personal diary in your pocket, where you jot down particular thoughts and anxieties of your own - as categorized in the book - 2 to 3 times a day. You'll review them in the afternoon. You will start to see them in a new light and advance your sense of self-worth. I went on to realize that the "AHA!“-experiences that my diary provided on an ongoing basis constituted peak-experiences within my otherwise normal day. Now I have a feeling of constantly improving my life. Most important: I'm now happy, I feel joy. We all have the right to a positive self-image. You have a right to be happy, the feeling of being worthy, deserving, entitled to your needs and wants, and to enjoy the fruits of your efforts. "Ten Steps to Being Your Best“ guides you through the process of deleting your "negative script“ from your mind and replacing it with a new and improved positive self-image. And it definitely worked for me.

I don't know if I can even properly illustrate how reading an authentic translation of the Psalms opened up my eyes to many things... many mysteries made clear and questions answered. Now I see in the Psalms an author with a vast wisdom, a true understanding of living a life based on the Torah and HaShem. These are much more than just prayers of comfort and healing that I always assumed they were... They contain the most accurate and insightful teachings I've ever seen concerning what is pleasing to HaShem and what happens to people when they die. It is noteworthy how often the word "kindness" is mentioned, and how the basic themes of all the Psalms could even serve as a guide-book for a person's entire life. King David was without a doubt on very very intimate terms with HaShem. It is truly amazing.

What does it mean to "wait every day" for Moshaich, and what will his coming accomplish in practical terms? This book starts with the primary source, the last two chapters of Mishneh Torah by Maimonides (Rambam), and follows with translations of discourses of the Lubavitcher Rebbe that illuminate the Rambam's teachings. The discourses deal with the function of Mashiach, the nature of the Biblical sources that foretell the Redemption, prophecies concerning Mashiach, and an explanation of "the ultimate good of the era of Redemption."

This book was written to educate Jews about the need to prepare themselves for the imminent beginning of the Messianic Era, but it will give everyone a very good introduction to the Torah-true way of thinking about Mashiach as a long-awaited reality that G-d will soon be revealing to the world. The book is very easy to read.

NEW review by D. L. bas Noah:

"Kindness," by Rabbi Zelig Pliskin, is a candid, relevant and valuable life-changing book. This definitive and honest book teaches examples and problem solving for things that EVERYONE encounters. It is not a lot of high-sounding words that one would read and then immediately forget all about. Instead, it gives a great amount of practical and vital help, and much of it addresses what is needed in present personal relationships and in NEW ones. "Kindness" is a book that is beneficial to ANY person and is Torah compatible. It is spiritually elevating and helps us to fulfill our mission. You will want to refer to it again and again, because it teaches how being kind to others is really also being kind to yourself, and there is a universal "ripple" effect. You can't read "Kindness" and not be changed, as long as you have a least a small sensitivity and desire in this direction. I am definitely keeping my copy of "Kindness" because it is so full of information that I absolutely need for doing a lot of good in the world. This will certainly increase my own happiness, as well as helping me to do my part to get myself and others ready for Moshiach, may he be revealed speedily in our days.

NEW Review by D. L. bas Noah:

I just received the book, "The Colorful Rainbow Dream" last night and read it immediately. I loved it. It was very professionally done. The words in the different rainbow colors now make it more significant when we really see a rainbow. It is a positive book all the way around. I appreciate its Torah accuracy. I didn't get bored at all reading it. It is a keeper. Also, I am so happy to say that it is a book that even a very observant Jew (layperson or Rabbi) wouldn't want to reject from his or her book collection. It isn't just for Noahides at all, but for everyone. And that makes me happy, because as regards to the messages of the seven laws, they are for everyone. My grandtwins will be coming to my house in two weeks, and I will have them read it (they are almost 10 years old), or I will read it to them. The book is wonderful!

Review by Catherine Waters OP, Phd, Associate Professor, Counseling Psychology and Licensed Psychologist, Caldwell College:

"In this delightful story of how three young children travel in a shared dream with their wise grandfather, Dr. Daphne Cohen presents the sophisticated mandates of the Noahide Code in a manner that is not only understandable, but intriguing, even amazing. The four travelers visit each of the world's continents, and on every stop they encounter one of the laws that G-d gave to Noah. The children see the laws come to life in the experiences of the people and other creatures that they encounter, thus learning these important lessons with the guidance of their grandfather, and by actually participating in helping others to learn the laws too. The simplicity of the fantasy is deceptive. There is deep truth in this slim volume, presented in a way that will be enchanting to young readers and to their caregivers. The challenge of passing on important traditions has just been made a bit easier."

Review by Dr. M. Schulman, Director of Ask Noah International, United Noahide Academies, and AskNoah.org:

"The special significance of this children's book is the artful way that the fundamental principles of faith are interwoven into the dialogue and the clever illustrations of the Noahide Code."

This book is an adolescent browser's paradise which captures the reader with 181 engaging questions about the world we live in, with photos and fun illustrations accompanying each of the simple, one-to-three-paragraph answers. Most of the questions relate to scientific topics, such as Question 41: "What causes oil to burn?" and Question 156: "What is Radar?" Some delve into history: Question 24: "What was the Boer War? And who were the Boers?" Question 16: "Who invented the first postage stamp and when?" Question 141: "When were books chained to desk and shelves, and when did this practice end?"

In many cases, the author phrases questions to highlight unexpected aspects of familiar objects or phenomena: Question 57: "Can flowers tell time?" Question 76: "Are babies born without teeth?" Question 117: "What connection is there between elephants and plastics?"

While targeted toward juvenile readers with a solid vocabulary and some prior knowledge, the book may also appeal to younger children, listening as questions and answers are read, while they examine the many thoughtfully selected images accompanying each topic. Even adults will likely discover many new things. (For instance, did you know that the first toothbrush was invented by the Chinese, and that unlike frogs, toads have no teeth?)

Parents will be pleased to find, sparsely sprinkled throughout the book in subtle but significant ways, affirmations of Torah values. For instance, Question 45 asks: "Why do we breathe heavily after jogging or running?" At the end of the three-paragraph answer, the author includes: "Thanks to Hashem's mercy, the pace of our breathing becomes normal again after a few minutes have passed." Refreshingly absent are unscientific conjectures about "evolution" and the age of the universe. Thus this wide-ranging book is meant to, and does, stimulate not only curiosity, but also awe at the intricacy, beauty and interconnectedness present throughout all of
G-d's creation. Its true spirit may be best represented by closing statements in the answer given to Question 35 ("How does yeast make dough rise?"): "What an amazing process! What a wonderful world Hashem [G-d] has created!"

*Note: This review only serves as a recommendation for the above titled book. A second volume was subsequently produced by the author.

Suggested for ages 3-6. This new book is a beautifully illustrated retelling of a famous story from the Talmud, about a Noahide in ancient Israel who exemplified the ideal of honoring parents. Dama the gem merchant passed up the opportunity to earn a fortune, when it would have required that he compromise in his respect for his father. Although the Seven Noahide Commandments do not include a commandment to honor parents, starting from the children of Adam and Hava all peoples of the world distinguished themselves by accepting this as a righteous obligation. As a message to all mankind, G-d rewarded Dama in a surprising and miraculous way!
