I began my spiritual journey as a Catholic and in my teenage years became an Evangelical Protestant. I spent nearly 10 years as a Protestant until I was introduced to Torah. I was taught that we all had to accept Torah (the 613 Mitzvot), but that the Rabbis didn't want us keeping Torah because we were christians and because we were Gentiles (which is partially true, but we didn't hear the whole story). And so at that time I became a Messianic Jew. I lived as a Jew (at least to the best of my abilities) for nearly 2 years. It never felt right...even though I loved Shabbos, I felt like I was lying to myself. In those two years I had always enjoyed reading Torah commentary from the Rabbis. Eventually I was faced with a question I had asked myself, how can we know more than the Rabbis when it comes to which path a man should take? After all, the movement I was a part of was only 10 or so years old, but Judaism dated back thousands of years! Wasn't the Torah given to them? Eventually I looked into which path the Rabbis taught a Gentile should take and I was introduced to the Noachide laws for the first time.
For the time being, I'm focusing on the most basic keeping of the Noachide commands (basically, the minimum requirement). Little by little I'll be working my way up. With all the previous groups I've been in, I've felt the need to rush past the level of my peers. However, I don't feel the need for that now since keeping Noachide is much simpler and authentic. |
